Accessibility

Accessibility

Wikipedia described web accessibility as follows: “Web accessibility refers to the inclusive practice of making websites usable by people of all abilities and disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, all users can have equal access to information and functionality.”

A)   Assistive Technology

This section of my blog explores new assistive technology. Assistive technology is important in web accessibility, because it is making those with disabilities have equal access to the webs information and functionality.

This is an app called Assistive Express by assistive apps. Users can buy and download this app on iTunes. It is an affordable Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) Device, to help people with difficulty in speech. While this is not exactly new, it continues to be updated with new features to enhance the user’s experience. One of the biggest challenges when using an AAC device is the time it can take to continue a conversation, due to the number of hits required to construct any sentences. Assistive Express is updating its products to overcome this challenge. New features in the version 3.61 AAC device include the prediction feature which can be enabled or disabled, favorites can be reordered, and the font size is adjustable to make it is easier for them to see what has been typed. This device is used on the iPhone or iPad.

B) Usability

This website not only has usability issues, it is possibly the ugliest website ever made. The moving background and flashing bright colors make it incredibly difficult to read any text on the page. The heading conflicts with the colors and movement so much that it takes awhile just to figure out what this website is even for. I don’t think this is an issue that could easily be resolved. A whole new design would be the best bet for this website.

Costco’s website is fairly easy to use, but still has some issues. There is a link which brings you to the coupons section, and even though you have already put in your location and it is stated at the top of the page, it makes you re-enter your province. This website has also been known to have ordering issues. When attempting to order different products it will sometimes go to the American site, even though you have entered into the Canadian one.
